Salisbury Cathedral
When I was in my early twenties I lived 3 miles from Salisbury and, I am ashamed to admit, never ever visited it. This says nothing about the cathedral but a lot about the younger me. I recently revisited the city and decided that I should make amends. I went there with no religious motivation but due to an increased respect and wonderment that this and other English cathedrals were build completely by hand. The foundation stone was laid on 28th of April 1220 and early construction completed in 1258. 70,000 tons of stone and 28,000 tons of wood were used in its construction; 420 tons of lead covering 4 acres were used on the roof. There are numerous amazing facts about the place but the one that is perhaps the most incredible is that the foundations are only four feet deep. The exterior is stunning and, for me, the interior is awe inspiring. If you are in the neighbourhood it really is not to be missed.
