Esna at night.
Esna is located about 33 miles south of Luxor and is approached from Luxor via a lock on the Nile. A few years ago we moored for the night in Esna in the small dahabiya on which we traveling. It was at the time of Ramadan and I was fortunate to be shown around the market place in this somewhat sleepy if busy merchant and farming town on the west bank of the Nile by a superb Egyptian guide named Wael Elidy. Markets are always interesting and a night market even more so. We spent some time wandering and were able to capture some of the characters and some of the atmosphere around the market. There appeared to be no European tourists in the area which suggests that the huge floating Gin Palaces don't pause here on their rush from Luxor to Aswan.
